After the opening of the Entrudo dos Caretos de Lazarim, we headed to the village and immersed ourselves in the authenticity of this unique Carnival. In Lazarim, the Caretos, with their masks carved from alder wood, bring with them tradition and catharsis. Carnival here is marked by activities such as meetings with artisans, photo raids and ethnographic parades, where bass drums echo with the sound of caretos.

Day 2: Podence in Macedo de Cavaleiros

Today, we explore Podence, in Macedo de Cavaleiros, home of the enigmatic Caretos. Originally from this region, they were recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The Caretos of Podence, with their masks and rattles, appear as devilish and mysterious images in carnival festivities. The fazanitos, young people who imitate the caretos, ensure the continuity of this centuries-old tradition.
